    Cultural Observations: Eastern European ‘luxury’

    (Embarrassing note to friends: We don’t have a car. We have a driver, and a housekeeper, and someone else to help too – so oversized the two bedroom apartment is never empty. And that apartment plus all the ‘help’ are about equal in cost to a decent apartment in Seattle – not much at all. Now, you can do the same thing in much of the rest of the world, but there is a definite class and culture difference between you and the staff. Whereas here in eastern Europe, it’s more like hiring your extended family and sort of living with them. And I gotta tell, ya’, if it wasn’t for the damned banking problem here, and the inability to ship stuff to from major retailers to Ukraine, I can’t imagine a better place or way to live. Yeah, it’s a bit dirty and run-down everywhere, but the people make up for it. Now, if I lived alone instead of with a tribe, I’d really prefer to just have a housekeeper/assistant of some kind – a wife without sex who can’t take your assets, vs a wife without sex in america who can take your assets. And you can have all the girlfriends you want. I really hate my government. Because if it weren’t for them I might actually be able to be happy here. So I might have to dispose of the government.)

    PUTIN’S EQUIPMENT RAID ON UKRAINE

    Russia ships in not 30 but 200 trucks, of supplies, resupplies, and arms, and ships back the heavy equipment from the arms factories. The reason Russia wanted eastern Ukraine is because that’s where Russian weapons technology is manufactured. So just as the soviets stole the german machinery and using it at home, the Russians are stealing what is really, their own machinery from Ukraine, to use at home.

    We can see this a number of ways, but as far as I can tell, it means that they have no hope of holding onto the territory that they keep losing and soon Ukraine will have the ability to destroy the factories and equipment and at that point, Russia has no material incentive in the short term.

    We have been saying for six months that they way to eliminate Russian pretexts was to just start off by destroying the factories, but without air power Ukraine cannot to it. Russia and Yanukovich conspired to weaken the Ukrainian military over the past few years, so badly that the impoverished country has to rebuild all from nothing – and the west is useless and nothing but a betrayer of promises.

    Again, rather than destroying cities and displacing hundreds of thousands, and destroying all hope of Russian participation in world affairs until Putin dies, it would have been trivially simple to simply buy the east and the peninsula districts from Kiev. The rest of the country wants to get rid of them anyway. It’s the home of most of our scumbags.

    You may want the consumption of a living in a country with an absolute nuclear family, but I’ll guarantee that once you tire of the consumption – which you will, because we all do – you will wish you lived in a country with an extended family, whose attention you can never stop consuming and whose insurance against the vicissitudes of life are irreplaceable by the state.

    I love Ukraine. The people. Despite the run-down, falling-apart, unmaintained, decaying, soviet architectural despair, I love every soul I know here. Even if, they would rather consume and experience, than appreciate the perfection of what they have, I love them anyway. Because if they don’t appreciate themselves, that may in part, be why the rest of us do.

    What decays in the west is not so visible: the family, the culture, the community, and the human soul, leaving an alienated husk waiting to die alone.

    The anglo-consumer west is a recipe for loneliness.

    Marx was so wrong it’s worse than tragic – it’s criminal. Alienation comes not from disassociation from MATERIAL things, but from family, tribe, country and nation.

    They are now regularly capturing Russian Regulars (uniformed military personnel) in eastern Ukraine. My people, who just got back from Cyprus, watching Russian television there, were laughing at how absurd Russian media is. I mean, they have crews fabricating nonsense full time. It’s amazing.

    Ukrainians aren’t that creative.

    Like I said. Russians will believe anything – the more conspiratorial the more believable.
