So the sooner we build one safe reactor per million people, the sooner we will get away from hydrocarbons. Because it is only at that scale that nuclear energy will approach the cost of hydrocarbons, and no other technology holds anywhere near the promise. Radioactive material decays no matter what we do. The universe is full of it. And you can keep refining it forever.)

Russia had no legal or economic reasons to invade Ukraine and conquer and seize the Crimea (or the entirety of asia east of the Urals for that matter), nor to invade eastern europe and set them back on century of economic development, and four centuries of normative and cultural development.
Russia has worked very hard to obtain and hold a warm water port and its only warm water ports are conquered territory and indefensible: Black Sea(Ukrainian), Koenigsburg (German/Polish), and Far Eastern (East Asian).

Russian is an even worse language for singing than German, but Russian composers produce some absolutely amazing works – one of which I have the luxury of listening to at the moment, accompanied by a middle aged Mezzo.
The eastern people also have time and discipline and still practice the manual arts. We have digital designers in the west but few manual artists remain. The inverse is true here in the east. People sing. They learn traditional music and folk music.
There is no small part of me that understands the difference between youthful desire for stimulation and adult appreciation of discipline, and that these two desires are in conflict. Either the impetuous young are taught discipline or they are later deprived of its results. The disciplined adult much deprive the impulsive child of the freedom of his impulses and direct them. The disciplined adult must tolerate enough desire for joy, that the discipline is used to convey it. Just as we transfer norms, laws, sciences, we must transfer our arts.
