—“Do you believe in The Big Bang and other ‘Nihilistic’ science fiction”— a silly person (putting aside the fraudulence of that statement, lol…) I don’t ‘believe’ in anything as you understand that term. I maintain a collection of possibilities that are as yet unsolved, a set I suspect are solved, and a set of things I cannot yet refute. I’m a scientist. My conceptual framework is via-negative (survival) or what you might consider ‘darwinian’. And all knowledge is forever contingent. As I understand it and I think I understand it as well as anyone living, we can describe what we can see, and we cannot describe what we can’t, and there is a lot we can’t, and the remaining problems we can solve in what we see, appear by all accounts to be determined by what we cannot see. Of the known options the idea of collection of bubbles (universes) holds the highest explanatory power, with the least demand for that which violates what we now of geometry. My value judgement of the structure of the universe has no influence over the truth or falsehood of it.

—“The earth is situated in a tiny, sparsely populated spur off of one of the spiral arms in the galaxy. In other words, we are located in the middle of nowhere. And we’ve only been communicating in the electromagnetic spectrum for about 100 years. It’s very likely that no one knows that we are here.”—Eric Blankenburg

IT IS VERY HARD NOT TO SPECIALIZE – FOR NOW
At our stage of development when we are at an in-between stage, and very nearly at the limit of our ability to construct tools (experiments) by which to conduct observations (measurements), yet unable to discover the pattern of relations that describe the next levels of complexity (the structure of the universe on one end and sentience on the other, and where we have all but exhausted research into subjects at human scale, we have passed the point at which one can spend enough time on enough subjects to master their application. It is however possible to master the fundamental patterns that cross all disciplines. The reason being that there are a very small number of fundamental laws. And to some degree the grammar and semantics we are searching for, consists of that set of categories, relations, values and operations (transforms).

Until we solve the missing fundamental forces of the universe we don’t know enough to speculate on other life forms.
If the SOL is a limit for physical travel then it’s just irrational for a civilization to do other than grow by rate of colonization.
If SOL is a limit to communication then communication has no value. If SOL is not a limit for communication, then we can’t likely see/hear anything.
So age of the universe plus demands upon planetary stability over time, plus SOL open questions, means …. hard to know until we get there ourselves.
Resources are not a reason to seek planets. Trade is very unlikely to be a reason to seek planets. Colonization is the only caloric reason that makes any sense.
Hence mechanical probes are the only valuable contact other than conquest, extermination, and replacement.
My intuition is that if life exists out there and can defeat the SOL or time problems, even if purely mechanical, then they’ve been here already.

“curt, What Is Your Position on The Origin of Life in The Universe?”
—“Where are you on the ‘origins’ questions, life and the universe? Do you think it matters if we are here by chance or by design?”—Matt Lawlor As far as I know we are nothing but a consequence of emergent complexity as life is the only known means of defeating entropy – with cooperation a multiplier, communication a multiplier, and intelligence a multiplier. So just as we see particles (wave effects) culminating in the components of atoms, culminating in elements, culminating in materials, culminating in cycles, culminating in biology, culminating in advanced life forms, I just see our existence as the net result of trial and error made possible by relatively ideal conditions in our rather rural safe zone in the galaxy in the relatively ideal conditions in this zone of the universe. It’s a beautiful thing that we exist, and we exist at this very young stage of the universe, and it’s possible or likely that we are a relatively rare thing in this galaxy if not in the universe, but the fact that sentient life exists is probably a relatively deterministic consequence of the value of conservation of energy in the face of permanent entropy. I think we are rare and the only crime we can commit is not seeking to be the gods we can be, in case there are no others yet, because of infrequency of conditions.
