—“Arabic philosophy was not Islamic in inspiration. It was born out of a desire on the part of people living under the subjugation of Islam to translate the classic texts of Greek philosophy. Most of its proponents were not Arabs. In fact: from about the eighth or ninth century A.D. till about the fifteenth some of the greatest Mohammedan theologians, historians, philosophers, grammarians, lexicographers, and philologists, who wrote in Arabic, were of Persian origin.”—

THE TERM ‘LOGOS’ IS AMBIGUOUS FOR A REASON 😉

Of course, I understand the concept as originally intended, as the universal law by which all things follow. But…the term ‘logos’ has evolved over history from ancient Greek, to Christian, To later philosophical thought. (The same way the left ‘appropriated and abused other terms).

    In Greek philosophy:
    1) Heraclitus conceived of logos as the universal law which all things follow.
    2) More generally, Logos referred to the rational principle that governs the universe and as associated with divine wisdom or reason.
    3) The Stoics used logos to refer to the animating power of the cosmos.

    In Christianity:
    1) Logos (λόγος) is translated as “Word” in the Gospel of John: “In the beginning was the Word (Logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
    2) In that context, it Jesus as the divine Word/Wisdom of God through which all things were created. It connects Jewish conceptions of Wisdom with Greek notions of Logos. (cd: herein lies the problem)
    3) Early Christian theologians like Justin Martyr equated Jesus as the incarnation of the Logos or divine Reason that orders the universe.

    In philosophy:
    1) Logos refers to reasoned discourse or meaning-laden language.
    2) Platonic philosophy contrasts logos (reasoned speech) with mythos (myth/story).
    3) Logos later became associated with logic and the rational deductive mode of thinking.

So in summary, logos has evolved from universal law,
to rational order, to divine wisdom, to meaningful discourse, by the attempt to bridge rational philosophy and divine revelation (cd: ack!), to rational deductive thinking and logic.

Mysticism generally refers to the experience, belief, or pursuit subjective emotional states constructed from the combination of the disassociation, submission to the pack response and the abandonment of responsibility, and conscious thought, resulting in positive auto-associations and continous emotional feedback from them, producing a state of extraordinary calm. This process, if practiced regularly, can assist in the formation of mindfulness, the demand for which increases dramatically as populations and divisions of labor increase and therefore certainty and agency decrease. It is one of the easiest disciiplilnes for most humans to learn and can be achived by multiple personal, social, political, or even conceptual means.

In simple scientific terms it assists in the transformation from socially regulated life in hunter gatherer tribes to complex agrarian life and modern technological life that are increasingly alienating, and because of neuroticism, particularly in women, and generate greater demand for mindfulness.

Mindfulness is the primary reason religions succeed in providing incentive to adopt the various rituals that demands self regulation and non aggression and forgiveness of those who offend.

  • That’s interesting because every sect says the same thing of every other sect. I

That’s interesting because every sect says the same thing of every other sect. In particular large numbers of protestants claim catholics aren’t christians. Or those christians that are spiritual or traditional but no theological in their disposition.

Unfortunately you aren’t the arbiter of what constitutes christianity any more than any other person. Instead christianity like all other religions is disambiguated from others by what religions they are not. And that is a relatively simple task. 😉

Furthermore given that christianity is a personal religion with low standards of testable conformance in behavior, then one of the benefits of chritsianity is “it is whatever I myself and my sect understand it to be.”

For the rest of us christians demonstrate similar moral ethical and normative behaviors that differe from those who were raised (indoctrinated) into different cultures with different religions.

You may think it matters what you think. But others only care about your demonstrated behavior. And you are judged in this world, and reap rewards, nothings, and punishments in this world by your actions, not your ‘beliefs’.

–“Faith is not a business transaction. Or at least it shouldn’t be. When it becomes a transaction, it’s worthless.”– Craig Gipson

I would need this statement explained to me, because I’m not quite sure which argument you’re making. But I think I might be able to science it if I was sure – and then explain that as you mean it, I assume you are correct – despite stating “worthless at all” instead of worthless to whom.

It was far easier to solve (science) every other problem I worked on than religion. Religion was the hardest problem in social science. It took me years. No other problem took more than a year or two.

Because we are unequal in sex bias (empathizing systematizing), unequal in traits (personality and intelligence) and unequal in experience(upbringing and education) … and despite this inequality, chrstianity claims to be a universal religion despite that it’s a personal religion where it’s meaning is whatever an individual can justify it means within the very broad boundaries it establishes.

Both islam and rabbinical judaism are far more rigorious innovations on top of christianity, just as christianity is an innovation on semitic cults to make them survivable against greco roman reason – which – unfortunately was a much higher burden on the mind and intuition than the semitic superstitions and mythicisms.

But the flexibility of christian religion, because it is so ‘unspecific’ and so ‘personal’, and more of a collection of parables and subequent concepts (trinity etc), it was more able to adapt to more advanced european civilization that was aristocratic military realism (top down) rather than underclass peasant mysticism (bottom up).

So given that in all aspects of life, we are free of previous survival, economic, social, and political constraints, with a vast scope of opportunities in each, we are diverging from one another more according to our sex biases, traits, class, experience, and ethnicity, than converging.

This has put extraordinary pressure on our depenence on a common set of weights and measures, of both cognitive frame, values, expectations, and behavior.

We have seen our people diverge into preference for a grammar (logic, narrative) that is within their cognitive ability and suits their traits and temperaments, reflecting our individual preference that grammar (logic) in the the spectrum of grammars available to man: myths, theology, ideology, philosophy, empiricism, science, and now operationalism made possible by our breadth of knowledge of the laws of the universe at all scales.

Under agrarianism, all but a tiny fraction of us were largely indifferent. And just as in early urban areas, it was possible for people to diverge into a division of labor and separate classes of influence and responsibility given our abilities, we are seeing people cognitively diverge into a division of cognitive labor using whatever system of understanding (measurement) they can possibly manage given the equilibriuim or disequilibrium between the feminine empathizing to masculine systematizing, the combination of feminine empathizing with feminine neuroticism and the intellectual capacity of the individual to access (use and understand) a grammar that services any point on that spectrum. We are, we have, diverged. So faith is only accessible to a certain coincidence of genetic, personality, and intelligence traits. For the rest they need increasing self confidence in the precision of, unambiguity of, consistency, and correspondence with actionable reality of, whatevrer set of principles they use to guide themselves through the kaleidic experience of life.

Spirit is intuition. It is fast. It is cheap. And we trust it more than our reason. Moreover, the more empathic, conforming, neurotic, and reactive vs systemic, disconforming, stable, and active one is, the more one requires dependence upon intuition, and the more one depends on a trained intuition to maintain self regulation.

So what are we going to do given the divergence between our people? We must accomodate them all.
