It’s more that it’s increasingly unlikely that they can ‘win’, when the USA’s purpose is to drag Russia into a 10+ year war of attrition, impoverishing the country and delegitimizing the state, which will need to keep increasing oppression of the people to maintain power.

The West’s goal, for the benefit of russians, but not for the benefit of putin and his (corrupt) cronies, is including russia in the federation of european countries, including mutual defense, and free trade. The EU has to end as a political opponent for that to happen.
