UTTERLY FALSE: IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH CULTURE
Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus experienced catastrophic economic and political collapse after the end of the soviet union, and they remain the ‘poor children of europeans’ because the soviet era generation will have to literally die off before the young generation can replace them. The people are stuck between the remaining soviet era bureaucrats and their corruption, the oligarchs, a government and especially judiciary paid for by the oligarchs, and a media by the oligarchs – which is, of course, why they look at their neighbor Poland vs their neigbor Russia, and want to follow poland into the EU: it’s simple economics.

After the collapse of the soviet union, people left both Russia and Ukraine by the millions, with Russian numbers difficult to calculate but with Ukraine losing amost a fifth of it’s population (something like 10 million) creating the brain drain that affects the countries today as much as it did the Irish and the Lebanese. But not everyone who wanted to leave had the resources to do so. So some women do have a ‘reserve’ resource: sex.

In all three countries this led to sex trafficking mostly by organized crime, baiting into hazard, and voluntary indenture, and willing and knowing prostituteion, just to escape extraordinary poverty. Even today, if you went to, say spend time in the bar at the [Redacted] hotel in downtown Kiev, (I have, it’s a contact point, especially for meeting relatives of the oligarchs, or business people who want a safe location. If you work with bureaucrats you meet them in bars and pubs), the category of escorts parading through with men in suits is in the supermodel range.

This process of economic crisis stabilized during the 2000s as did the Ukrainian economy, until the crash which disproportionately affected ukraine and caused the post 2010 demand for integration into the EU, which led to the maydan revolution when then-president Yanukovych took a $4B bribe from Moscow to reject it – causing that revolution.

Now, as some of you know, I have experience at all levels in Ukraine, and quite by accident my bodyguard also worked at a strip club – which are not the revolting affairs they are here in west, but much more ritualized and civliized, and men and women both visit them. In clubs there are usually typical bars, strip bars, and karaoke bars in different rooms in the same club. (I have been a judge of amatures in the amatue competition at one of the strip clubs believe it or not.) And so, as my job is partly intel, and owning or running these clubs require bribing officials to avoid being shaken down, I met and talked with owners (and considered buying one) So I learned about the economics of the business both locally, nationally, and internationally. And this includes the prostitution business, and of course, the worst aspect of it – baiting young ignorant women one generation off the farm (village), in an era before now-universal internet raised awareness, with false promises. Though by this time sex trafficing had largely evaporated as other than an extension of organized crime, drug sales, prostitution drug sales, and the selling of addicted prostitutes.

PS: the average ukrainian is about as racist as the average indian or chinese. They still have ‘face control’ all over the place – which keeps out the undesirables. Furthermore they are not above using extraordinary force to punish transgressors. So the kind of uncivilized behavior we have here in the west just doesn’t happen in Ukraine. Ever.
