What he means is the press is dramatizing a bunch of losers in the hippy-gay-druggie-alternative-lifestyle section of Seattle having a block party and virtu signaling.

I am unclear as to why the vox populi has decided he’s evil other than his is terribly injudicious in how to talks to the common folk (as am I) who are at present extremely agitated and looking for symbols to rally for and against as proxies for their frustrations.
