One is that Theriault is one of the many variations of Thiery, a derivative of germanic theodoric. I find this less likely. Other High Ground” or more likely “land worker” (farmer). Origins apparently in Brittany (where most of my mother’s side appears to have come from), although genetics of the theriault’s looks more gaulish than breton. Most trace to Nova Scotia where they were forcibly removed by the british, and moved into main then the rest of new england. Also some immigrants into boston colony early. Theriault’s were middle and upper middle (prosperous farmers), and Oulettes (less prosperous) farmers that hired out to other families when necessary. They were alien to me growing up.
