AFAIK, consciousness is a very simple outcome of continuous recursive memory, and will emerge in any species with enough neurons to produce enough recursion. The problem is high cost of brains vs energy via food vs morphology to obtain it vs need for socialization (prediction).

As @NoahRevoy advises, you need a group of successful men more than a relationship – at least successful at the class and stage of life you’re seeking. The whole ‘go your own way’ thing isn’t quite right. It’s socializing, developing friendships, doing things in real world.

I had to do this through work, intellectual pursuits, or through art. Others do it through sports. It doesn’t matter. What I don’t see as constructive is doing it through video games. It’s sedating. It works. It’s better than nothing.
