A distinction without a difference.
If you reach what you refer to is a meditative state, which consists of practicing regulating your attention, that means that the auto association that your brain is always performaing as long as you are still living, is not capturing your attention.
In fact the means by which you preserve that attention is simply forcing recursive auto association like all other attention does, by the practic of emphasis of on attentional concentration.
You can easily demonstrate this by the fact that surprises such as pain, discomfort, or surprise of some sort, does pierce your attentional cycle, and capture some portion of your attention no matter how small.
There is no woo woo. The brain is very simple. But what it can imagine via auto association is infinite, and bound only by the information available in the brain and captured from the environment.
I can go into excruciating detail. Right down to biochemical level. I do not err. Despite the magic that the philosophyers and theologians and other mysticisms wish to preserve.
