Nothing to bind them past the trade contracts.Feb 12, 2019, 10:05 PMAndy Ujku-DardaniaJason HeisenbergFeb 12, 2019, 10:05 PMPaul TrippSeems like the armies lost the major wars, and even when they won, they still lost the aftermath. And the cultural impact of the naval culture spread as much due to the empire culture that adopted their ideas and evangelized them as due to the naval culture itself.Feb 12, 2019, 10:41 PMサンフ ァイアDemocracy is a birth defect of an Empire. Empire should be Germany(HRRDN) and Army should be USA.Feb 12, 2019, 10:44 PMVincent PicciottiYeah but I love the Roman Empire

    Something special about it

Also something special about the culture of Germany and England completely separate from anotherFeb 12, 2019, 11:09 PMChristian KalafutCurt Doolittle where does Makedon factor in this?Feb 12, 2019, 11:51 PMDaniel Roland AndersonFunny how I first heard of the Hanseatic League when I started following Curt.

And History was one of my majors.

🙄Feb 13, 2019, 12:56 AMArno KælandDaniel Roland Anderson What many do not know – as the history is long forgotten – is that the Frisian peoples had established a similar trading network in the post-Roman era along the North Sea, Baltic and Channel.Feb 13, 2019, 3:19 AMFrancesco PrincipiCurt, I would replace “Empire” with “Grand Strategy”Feb 13, 2019, 3:27 AMMarshal KhanGood enough to stave off even Macedonia at it’s highest.Feb 13, 2019, 6:23 AMNikola DzhilvidzhievMakedon, Seleukia and Ptolemaic Egypt are proto-empires, harbingers of Rome.Feb 13, 2019, 8:14 AMCurt Doolittleinteresting…. that’s interesting… maybe yes.Feb 13, 2019, 8:45 AMConnedor CraigDidn’t france have a larger army than the german states until the rise of prussia?Feb 13, 2019, 9:05 AMCurt Doolittleyes but they didn’t use the prussian strategyFeb 13, 2019, 9:17 AMJWarren PrescottYou can add Pre 1946 Japan in there too – PacificFeb 13, 2019, 9:55 AMAnne SummersSparta ended up a failed state IMO, because of too much exclusivity of their army (you could only be born to it). I can see specialist groups being so exclusive (with incentive to join; like marrying in due to merit).Feb 13, 2019, 9:57 AMCurt DoolittleAaron Kahland well that’s the issue right? (a) Frisia was first. not only with trade but with manorialism (b) they’re all the same ‘people’, and it all spread from there. (c) genetically the dutch are the most genetically superior people for good reason.Feb 13, 2019, 10:21 AMArno KælandCurt Doolittle Well – I would caution that the Dutch are not Frisians (though some are) and that the Frisians are not Dutch (though some are).

What I find interesting about many of our contemporaries is their putting Vikings on a pedestal. We can certainly praise them for their exploration and trading but they aren’t the OG heathens to use modern American parlance. Instead, it is the Frisians (and some others) who pre-dated the Vikings – rebuilt a new civilization upon the ruins of the Roman civilization North-west of the Rhine, rebuilt trade routes throughout both areas previously Roman and well beyond and later fought ferociously to protect their religion. The same really can’t be said for the Norse.

We remember the Norse because they were the Johnny-come latelys and they were able to preserve the Eddas because Christian armies couldn’t march to Iceland. But the more interesting story is an earlier one.Feb 13, 2019, 10:28 AMChristian KalafutI already figured this but Makedon smokes anything Sparta ever didFeb 13, 2019, 1:44 PM
