In general what we’re taught in school about wars like the Civil War or World War II are reduced to simplistic, absurd moralistic narratives that are far removed from the more purely financial and geopolitical forces that caused it to happen. Abraham Lincoln did not really care about slaves, and he did not think that blacks were capable of democracy. His reasons for going to war were financial.
