1) By the time this started to blow up on social media (it was a non-issue at the event – we all understood what we were doing) I didn’t really get that what we were doing wasn’t obvious. And it initially pissed me off. I couldn’t understand why it mattered.

Repeat. I get it. I got it at the time. I didn’t expect our people to not understand the strategic necessity. we came very close to having another cville. This was the cost of de-escalation. It was a small price to pay.
Next time: train everyone not to fall for commies bait.
