In general terms, art history (if you study it) consists almost entirely in innovation in materials and craftsmanship, that are decorated with innovations in aesthetics (symmetry, plenty, bounty, content), while what is expressed, like archetypes, varies little: ‘more’ something.

Cancer innovates, viruses innovate, criminals innovate, liars innovate, marxists, postmodernists, and feminists innovate, but that tells us nothing about additive or subtractive.
