We did’nt really end the dark ages and restore the equivalent of roman administration until the high british empire. And we had the industrial revolution immediately thereafter. So yes, we had a dark age of ignorance and superstition that was totally unnecessary.

Not compared to the Romans. We didn’t catch Rome until 1800. If we hadn’t had the Jewish, Christian, Muslim dark ages, and the Christian destruction of the arts and knowledge of the ancient world we would have had the industrial revolution within three hundred years – maybe less.

The orthodox church in russia had a shorter period, never attempted a parallel government that competed with state. And had to eject centuries under mongol rule. Never repeated in acquinas or augustine’s failed attempts.
