Working with the data on India is optimistic. Working with data on the middle east (all of islam in general) is exhausting. But working with the data on Africa is exhausting, emotionally draining, and depressing. I don’t know how developmental economists can do it daily.

Romans allowed local custom, they were largely interested in facilitating trade and little else. It’s more rational to think of Romans like anglos as distributing a secular religion of commerce. Not for china. It’s cultural monopoly.
