The rest of the world interprets this incorrectly as mongol influence rather than as having inherited the same problem facing the mongols. Vast territory too little population, and high resource cost of border preservation.

For reasons opposite from what you’re thinking: that Russia began as a baltic civilization and as Russia expanded and took over the Mongol empire, that it encountered an increasing diversity of hostile borders, leading to a different strategic problem than western Europe.

Russian military and political strategy is different from european because it’s a baltic civ with south eurasian borders, and mongol history. Europe has waterways and access to seas. England-Athens, Germany-Sparta, America Rome, and Russia-Byzantium
