This is because men were responsible for all family members and especially daughters, who would remain with the household if not married. This is because only men could insure family members, and women require insurance. And worse, the public requires insurance that women will not become a burden on the public for producing children without parents to pay for them, which required a man to produce the income so that women could, within a household, convert it to consumables.
