Easy. Pieter Bruegel both the elder and younger. Happy chunky peasants, celebrating. Once we get to the invention of photography the painters quite literally ‘get too good’ at representationalism. The victorians were quite good. The romanticists much better. But in some ways they reflect more sophistication than the simplicity of the dutch who were the first bring that wealth to the ordinary people via their innovations in finance and trade. So, while like most people I’ll appreciate the romantic era we all admire most in the reconstruction of our pagan heroes, I’ll take the simple joy of the dutch on Christmas. 😉
