We don’t think of the history of art as a history of technology. Van Gogh, Cezanne, Gaugin, Picasso sought the primacy of style and cheap fast production. (VG painted 200 in his last two years.) All ‘bad artists’ by my judgement. But one of many 19thC stylistic revolutionaries.

I can explain why the art world eventually, after his death, considered him innovative, and why he remains popular. Once photography arrived, painters had to discover exaggerated styles. I can also explain why many of us find his work unappealing. I find it unappealing myself.
