IMO: One of the biases we ‘suffer from’ is underestimating the sophistication of english civilization ‘from the bottom up’ vs what we assume were more advanced (top down) countries in europe. English history isn’t as generalizable as our familiarity with it presumes.

Runes are letters, not symbols. They appear to have derived from lost middle culture of the Alps that in turn derived them from Greek. Tho we can’t omit Roman influence. AFAIK they go back to the 1st century AD and likely the 2nd c. BC b/c of necessary adoption rates.
