    Cultural Observations: Eastern European ‘luxury’

    (Embarrassing note to friends: We don’t have a car. We have a driver, and a housekeeper, and someone else to help too – so oversized the two bedroom apartment is never empty. And that apartment plus all the ‘help’ are about equal in cost to a decent apartment in Seattle – not much at all. Now, you can do the same thing in much of the rest of the world, but there is a definite class and culture difference between you and the staff. Whereas here in eastern Europe, it’s more like hiring your extended family and sort of living with them. And I gotta tell, ya’, if it wasn’t for the damned banking problem here, and the inability to ship stuff to from major retailers to Ukraine, I can’t imagine a better place or way to live. Yeah, it’s a bit dirty and run-down everywhere, but the people make up for it. Now, if I lived alone instead of with a tribe, I’d really prefer to just have a housekeeper/assistant of some kind – a wife without sex who can’t take your assets, vs a wife without sex in america who can take your assets. And you can have all the girlfriends you want. I really hate my government. Because if it weren’t for them I might actually be able to be happy here. So I might have to dispose of the government.)

    Everyone returning attention that is given.

    I remember when we were like this.

    Because we were all family.

    CULTURAL OBSERVATIONS:

    You may want the consumption of a living in a country with an absolute nuclear family, but I’ll guarantee that once you tire of the consumption – which you will, because we all do – you will wish you lived in a country with an extended family, whose attention you can never stop consuming and whose insurance against the vicissitudes of life are irreplaceable by the state.

    I love Ukraine. The people. Despite the run-down, falling-apart, unmaintained, decaying, soviet architectural despair, I love every soul I know here. Even if, they would rather consume and experience, than appreciate the perfection of what they have, I love them anyway. Because if they don’t appreciate themselves, that may in part, be why the rest of us do.

    What decays in the west is not so visible: the family, the culture, the community, and the human soul, leaving an alienated husk waiting to die alone.

    The anglo-consumer west is a recipe for loneliness.

    Marx was so wrong it’s worse than tragic – it’s criminal. Alienation comes not from disassociation from MATERIAL things, but from family, tribe, country and nation.

    I wish I could bottle the experience of the transformation of life in the early 80’s after the tragedy of the 60-77 period. Star wars started the new positive mythos. Reagan restored confidence, discourse and hope. Gibson and Scott gave us visions of a technological rather than warfare future. Technology promised economic opportunity. Studios produced moral movies with white characters, a hint of pagan magic and christian justice, after a decade of degeneracy.

    That brilliance lasted through the 2001 collapse, and the 2002-2008 period that followed was but a temporary interwar peace funded by transfer of excesses into the housing market – America’s most important and nearly exclusive industry.

    I knew the end was nigh because our advantages were consumed.

    We have made moral and yet self destructive and world harming policies since the first world war.

    We are not the worlds parent. We cannot defend Brittania – something she herself would not do. We cannot defend europa. Had the world degenerated into the poverty of communism and had we crushed the communists and socialists at home with the ruthless violence they deserved, then we would still be the wealthiest people on earth, and the rest still wallowing in socialist poverty.

    But we killed europa to constrian germany against the moral corruption of england, and we sacrificed ourselves to constrain communism.

    All so that we would not feel guilty crushing local socialists, most of whom we had only recently allowed to immigrate.

    No. More. Guilt. It drives us to actions we are indeed guilty for.
