    HACKED MAC LAPTOP = HACKED CREDIT CARD

    The saga continues.

    So, in the Vancouver airport somehow I picked up something via either the web or email. Not sure what it could have been. But it toasted my Mac’s hard drive after stealing all my personal information.

    I backed up my drive, put a new one in, and restored it carefully, only to have it be reinfected again. Replaced that drive, then copied over only the documents from the backup.

    It took about two weeks for the credit card info to show up on the watch list of the bank, and they cancelled my card, and sent me a new one.

    It looks like the Mac universe has caught up with the windows universe. WHat is the barrier to pareto efficiency? About 20%.

    The fact that macs attract this kind of software means that mac’s have passed the tipping point. :/

    I hate spammers and hackers. When I was doing this nonsense all we cared about was leaving “Hi there”, and a little poem or rhyme in your root directory. Fun is one thing. Theft is another.

    WEB SERVER DOWN?

    OK. Well. it turns out that naughty software did a nasty hack on my .htaccess file and munged its rewrite rules. The culprit? The vendor’s auto-update program. Had to hack it back together. Not my thing really. But got it live again.

    Sigh. You can’t trust anyone these days. 🙂

    So, it looks like my macbook pro caught a virus. Either at home or the airport. Not sure where. There are logs and a few other artifacts on it. A couple of file sharing trees. First time that’s happened to me. Been trying to clean it up all afternoon. Took one computer down, killing the hard drive. Now the other seems to be infected too. Brought it to apple , restored from time machine. Reinfected the new disk… sigh. This time, new antivirus first, then restore only the apps and documents without the settings. Hopefully that works.

    I LOVE THE APPLE STORE AND APPLE SERVICE

    Was having some odd problems with my 17″ Macbook Pro – intermittent performance problems. Took it in. Hard drive was starting to fail. (I really need a SSD in that machine, I”m too hard on it.) I backed it up. They replaced it under warranty. Five hours later they send me an email telling me to pick it up. Just love my Apple products.

    TROUBLE WITH SERGEY BRIN’S COMMENTS ABOUT APPS

    I have a hard time taking Brin’s criticism of FB and Apple seriously. Google is an app. FB is an app. Apple is an app/hardware structure. Google makes its money from freely available information. FB and Apple, as well as some international sites, consist of closed content. Since advertising works on google and doesn’t work on FB and elsewhere, then I don’t understand what he’s complaining about. Google owns the commercial and intellectual sphere. Apple is trying to make sure porn and viruses don’t make it onto their platform, and FB is trying to make something, anything, that will make money over the long term by understanding consumers and their preferences in a way that Google seems unable to.

    Why this is bad just doesn’t make sense to me.

    Now, if you talk about the government’s threatening to hide information and communications from their people, then yes, I understand that. I understand that China should probably be isolated from the entire internet infrastructure so that we can as easily shut them out if we want to — and may need to since our military relies upon the internet now.

    But I don’t understand the concern with information that’s inaccesible in ‘apps’.

  • The idea is that a) you get a custom banner page, and b) that you can add a lot

    The idea is that

    a) you get a custom banner page, and

    b) that you can add a lot of custom badges to customize your page.

    HOWEVER

    a) the two column timeline is a terrible, UI disaster that makes the page disorienting and a mess to look at.

    b) The ‘About Me’ information is obscured, and then presented badly in two column format on the ‘About Page’

    c) It is not at all intuitive that the ‘badges’ are supposed to represent a ‘menu’. … It’s a mess. A complete mess.
