Razib: I don’t think that’s correct. Even after the Norman Conquest—England retained a fundamentally Germanic foundation in its governance, societal norms, and group strategy. English Common law, checks on royal authority, decentralized governance, german feudal model not french, reciprocity between lords and vassals, aristocratic egalitarianism (not stratification), sovereignty of the individual, development of high trust commons. Protestant divergence. Germanic customary land rights. Earlly capitalism free markets, economic autonomy. The freeman-soldier. germanic assemblies evolved to parliament. Empiricism, practical science. (vs idealism and universalism). Moral reciprocity, duty, respect. (opposite of catholic). In summary: legal traditions, decentralized governance, aristocratic egalitarianism, and emphasis on individual liberty and responsibility. Divergence from French political behavior demonstrates the persistence of these Germanic foundations. This only changes meaningfully after the industrial revolution and the FINANCIALIZATION of the crown.

Just want to emphasize that english is a west germanic language, and that england only diverged from germanic civilization after 1840. So, assimilating germans is sort of a non-sequitur until at least a decade or two after german unification. The argument was and remains that america was (and outside of large coastal cities) institutionally and linguistically english but culturally and psychologically german.

Yes, well, I’d happily take the debate. The question is what is the subject of it? His conclusion that valence is utilitarian for a given morphology and biological complexity – which is absurdly obvious. Or his conclusion of the primacy of experience over existence which is nonsense – and even more mathematically simulable given marginal indifferences in action for everything with a neuron. Plato and his forms were childish. This is even more so.

Accusation without argument. And I am quite certain I can defeat any such argument. It’s not as though Hoffman lacks critics.
The mathematics consist of simplified simulations not proofs. That said that’s not the point: the reversal of the primacy of existence over experience is.…

I see no challenge at all. Please present one the content of which is testifiable rather than a fictionalism. There is little chance I err in any fashion.
Fear uncertainty and doubt is not an argument but a straw man.

What if anything does that have to do with anything I said? What experiment? What results?

We can suppose (fictionalize) many things. The question is whether the are constructible and operational within known limits of known laws.
