    DR HAIDT

Relying upon a subjective frame of reference hinders further insight into the causes of behavior. So, instead of:

—“Conflict occurs when someone defines another’s behavior as deviant – as immoral or otherwise objectionable”—

I’m going to reframe this statement so that it provides a bit more explanatory power without engaging in the suggestion endemic to empathic experience and value judgement.

Conflict occurs when someone seeks to impose a cost on another person, consisting of :

    1) loss of opportunity for experience – paying the cost of lost opportunity;

    2) increased demand for discipline – paying the cost of behavioral modification;

    3) loss of status or imaginary status – again resulting in opportunity for reward.

    4) loss of normative investment

    5) loss of material investment

    6) loss of offspring, mates, kin, or friends.

All moral justifications for the imposition of cost on others depend upon the actor’s and subject’s perception of the terms of cooperation. In other words, moral arguments do not bother one’s enemies. Only those whom we ether cooperate with or seek opportunities to cooperate with.

We most commonly call demand for the payment of these costs ‘shaming’, and the population we shame the person with ‘rallying’. The purpose of rallying and shaming is to deprive the subject of the cooperation – meaning opportunities for entertainment, friendship, production, or mating. The degree of rallying increases the scope of opportunities the subject will lose.

Why then is rallying and shaming possible to employ as a means of coercion in some circumstances and not others? Well, have you ever heard the adage “academia is petty because the stakes are so low”? It’s not just academia where the stakes are low. In contemporary urban life, the stakes for almost every social relations are low because opportunity costs of association are near zero, and marginal difference in value when opportunity costs are near zero are also near zero. Hence the emphasis on signaling in dress, hobby, and possessions in urban areas.

Rallying, Gossiping and Shaming can be successfully employed where the participants have limited value internally to one another, and externally to non-group members, and because of individual lack of value the only obtainable value members have , is collective action expressed as deprivation of opportunity of others outside the group – ie Boycott.

    Therefore:

    (a) students compose a revenue source for universities.

    (b) students individually have little (if any) value other than as a revenue source.

    (c) boycott by students causes externalities – potential loss of future revenue, but also loss of status signaling by the administration, staff, and faculty, all of whom depend upon signaling precisely because of marginal indifference of administration faculty and staff at other than at the extremes.

Furthermore, students are for the first time finding power in collective action and find stimulation for the first (and perhaps last) times in their lives where their collective action is substantial enough to cause a change in the course of events. In other words, power is both unifying and exciting.

Victimhood then is vehicle by the privileged and valueless to obtain stimulation as a consequence of exercising power as a group. It’s another exercise of parental rebellion and an attempt at new stimulation – greater sovereignty – and therefore maturity.

Now, the question why this generation can rely upon rallying and shaming, and the question why the 60’s generation can rely upon rallying and shaming to threaten deprivation of opportunity to collect revenues and to maintain status signal (and to gain signals for some), is one of economics, class and genetics. Conversely why could some other generations not make use of rallying and shaming?

I’m not a terribly big fan of Nietzsche, but this is an example of Will To Power and little else.

We have little public record of some groups – we didn’t notice the German immigrants right – despite that they’re larger in number than the British? The catholics caused the prohibition movement and a good deal of the consequences of the depression, and a weakening of rule of law, but they even built their own schools and universities. But we noticed other groups as silent but beneficial such as Ukrainians in Canada, Hindus in the entrepreneurial sector, and East Asians in technical sectors in America. And we noticed other groups not silent – relying upon their traditional economic, class, and genetic strategies: shaming.

Our genes are pretty effective puppet masters. And for many of us we are not even aware of the strings – despite the fact that nearly all we say and do in every circumstance is at their direction.

Heterogeneity breeds signaling conflict, breeds normative conflict, breeds economic conflict, breeds residential and workplace conflict, and culminates in polarizing political conflict. Conflict increases demand for authority to resolve difference. Rule of law consisting of universal rules is sacrificed in favor of human discretion. Rule of law cannot resolve incommensurable differences. The more heterogeneous a polity the lower the trust the more demand for authority the more discretion the more corruption.

Eventually, why do groups ABC contribute to commons consumed by groups DEF. Why do groups ABC sacrifice retirement and reproduction to fund unemployment and reproduction by BCD.

Universities are just a barometer of an incoming high pressure front.

    Curt

( On a totally unrelated subject, I’m getting a little too distracted with the fun stuff and propaganda, and I need to narrow my work again to reading papers, writing tests and proofs, working on the book, and working on the product. So this post is more of a promise to myself to use a little more discipline.;) )

  • Chivalry and Monogamy: The Female Price for Her Liberty

[A] chivalrous man acts chivalrously in exchange for attention, grace, femininity, beauty and courtesy. The difference between the super-predator and the gentlemen-caretaker is merely the incentive provided to behave as such by women. There is no free ride for the female. Either we get attention and respect, or there is no reason to preserve the pretense of civility, and no currency in chivalry. Chivalry was invented by the church as a means of providing social status for service rather than predation. Feminism is a kleptocratic philosophy – they want everything without paying for it. Seemingly ignorant of the fact that it is just as easy to discipline, abuse, and enslave women as it is to treat them with care. Like marriage, chivalry is a price women pay for their relative liberty, despite their free passage through man’s universe. This is unpleasant, impolitic, but entirely true. Incentives matter.

LETS KEEP PRAISE OF PUTIN TO WHAT HE’S ACTUALLY DOING WELL

    (from Elsewhere)

Well, lets just say that American Utopianism is a failed experiment because only Protestants have been able to construct a high trust society. The Anglo mythos is that oppressed people need to be free, rather than strong government and strong institutions are require in low trust societies in order to maintain any semblance of order.

American (and Anglo) utopianism has worked where it spread consumer capitalism (property rights, contracts, rule of law, fiat money and credit). But the Democratic experiment has been a catastrophe. Democratic utopianism has failed because only Germanic peoples have been able to construct a high trust society reasonably free of corruption.

Other societies cannot do this without generations of a functional middle class, and as aggressive a campaign to suppress the rates of reproduction of the lower classes, and prohibition on cousin marriage. The west hung 1% of people a year for most of its history. They starved those who were unproductive over harsh winters.

So it is disingenuous for westerners to criticize the harsh punishment of developing societies. It was only since 1900 that the west stopped aggressive use of hanging, and it has led to vast numbers of incarcerated peoples.

Most other polities cannot imagine a society with as little small crime as america has. This is because of aggressive prosecution in order to preserve their high trust society and the economic velocity that results from it. America has much violent crime among its minorities, but about the same violent crime as Europe among whites.

So american high trust society is dying from aggressive immigration of underclasses that reverse 3000 years of history – it was started in the 1960s by our ‘left’ (socialists) as a means to seize power by immigration where they could not achieve it in a predominantly germanic country by persuasion and propaganda.

Putin is a reasonably good Czar who has managed to seize most of the heavy industry in the country for personal purposes. Most of those personal purposes are designed to restore Russia to what he considers its history (despite the rather murderous history of the Soviets, Ivan the Terrible, and the Mongols.)

If Putin were simply HONEST and said “I must do this to change my society” most of the world would agree with him.

If Putin had purchased Crimea from Ukraine (by asking the west to force the deal – they would have) for discounted oil and gas, he would not have caused the entire western world to pivot to contain Russia again in fear that another group of soviet lunatics had seized power. Instead eastern Europe is simply waiting for the ability to acquire nuclear weapons to keep Moscow at bay. This was foolish.

If Putin simply stated why he was doing what he does the world would agree with him because westerners KNOW that democracy has failed us. We KNOW that decadence has been spread by our left and its alliance with feminism.

If Putin would stop the RT propaganda that is totally fabricated then the western conservatives would support the growth of Russian power as the SAVIOR of the west rather than anther lunatic they need to contain.

If Putin stayed on message that the western liberal model has been a failure he would lead the world, not by fear of lunacy, but by being THE ONLY RATIONAL MAN STANDING.

There is no need to LIE when you are RIGHT, and when everyone AGREES with you. It’s ridiculous.

Thankfully Syria has provided a means for Russia to obtain a Pipeline south, and taken responsibility from the states for policing the muslim world. Also this lets Putin demonstrate wisdom and strength to his people, and allow Russian warriors to gain some experience, without scaring neighbors further and causing more damage to the Russian economy.

The Russian empire can never expand into the east again. it was a disaster the last time. Soviet Occupation was intolerable and the people of eastern Europe fear Russians more than they ever feared nazis.

However, all of the islamic world needs adult supervision and Russia is the only adult in the neighborhood. And pretty clearly, utopian westerners are unfit to parent primitive peoples into modernity.

  • Q&A: “Why Are People ‘Triggered’ By Doolittle?”

[I] have been openly attacking the Mises Institute’s propagandizing of rothbardianism for two years now. And they have no response to my criticisms (they can’t have one really – they can only adapt to them.) People invest their self worth in these ideologies to the point which they are not competing institutional solutions but hats to hang one’s self worth upon. It’s only logical that they defend their priors by non rational, non-empirical, largely symbolic and emotional means. The great thing about Rothbard is that despite being mostly wrong, he’s partly right, and what he’s right about is relatively easy for amateurs to understand. If people understood my arguments they would grok that I’m completing the ANCAP project by converting it from pseudoscience and kantian rationalism to a scientific argument that’s uniform across biology, morality, philosophy, law, politics and economics. Which, just in terms of explanatory power is pretty hard to criticize. But if the end result is preservation of investment, preservation of self image, rejection of the effort and time needed to improve one’s knowledge and a justification of non-contribution to the commons for the because one is rejected by the mainstream culture, then that’s an excuse for one’s behavior not a pursuit of a moral good, a sustainable political order, or an scientific truth about cooperation among men. Cheers
