MacGregor is perhaps one of the greatest on the ground warfighters that america has produced since the second world war. He is also one of the greatest military reformers since the failures of Vietnam. He is also a vehement anti-globalist, who does not want the US in foreign wars. And he is perfectly happy with the collapse of the world system of finance and trade. But he is too ignorant of the economics and the consequences of doing so. And as such like most right wingers, would prefer to rapidly contract the US footprint, depsite the vaccuum it would create and the crises it would spawn. While the more common sentiment is that we must withdraw slowly so that the rest of the world can re-arm and self-defend as the last three empires continue to collapse. He also is a grifter that is now making money from consulting and self promotion like every other right winger who gets his finger in the pie. So his positions aren’t always exactly intellectually honest.

Mearsheimer is making the same error, even if his general theory is correct, in that most wars of consequence result from great powers consisting of the core states of civilizations seeking to create local hegemony – which is of course just what Huntington said would happen in the conflict of civilizations.

They’re both silly people in pursuing ideological ends that justify their attempts at attention and grift, while ignoring the inescapable consequences that are WORSE than the costs they seek to evade.
