What we read into this statemetn is that he would surrender ukrainian territory to Russia. As far as I know this isn’t his objective. If on the other hand the two eastern provinces were lost, the southern restored, and crimea restored, this would be a compromise that was in Ukraine’s interest, and would get ukraine into NATO.
