Don’t lie.
We all have opinions.
Not all of us try to profit from them by repeated disregard for the law despite being given every reasonable chance to stop. He wasn’t punished just for his propaganda in support of an enemy murdering citizens, but because despite being given every single chance to stop he continued when he could have just left the country.
He wasn’t a good person by any measure and trying to excuse his behavior is no different from doing the same for any other criminal.
