OK. I’ll raise the priority of answering this one. Meetings all day but I’ll find a way to write more if I need to:
Outline: all costs are opportunity costs (time, space, resources). All opportunity costs decrease as population density increases – with an extra 20% return at about every doubling; Subsequently, spatial (rental, home) costs increase as density increases. (All increases in wages are captured by real estate and taxation). As density increases, so does divergence of interests, and so does our inability to excercise responsibility for and preference for, the commons. And as a consequence one’s influnce over the commons decreases; thereby generating demand for authority to resolved those differences in preference and responsibility. All people prefer free riding and prefer irresponsibility. Therefore whatever political system you have that favors whatever coalition will determine who fulfills the demand for authority. This is never the middle class that is the ONLY class with universal self interests that are also moral interests of all. Women are the primary consumers of everything from opportunity to attention, and in urban environments the cost of the space and resources necessary for children impose a non-linear cost of women’s ability to obtain consumption and attention and emotional stimulation. Therefore cities are ovary graveyards for any woman who must sacrifice anything at all given the cost of living. So conversely, only the poor who practice low investment parenting reproduce.
