The origin of religion is the need for mindfulness: the suppression of neuroticism (worry, anxiety, fear, panic), as we, as social animals, are incdreasingly alienated by the increase in population, division of labor, and knowledge of our own irrelevance, and increasing absence of insurance by family, clan, and tribe. Religions evolved to produce mindfulness and insulate us from the uncertainty that increases as the uncertainty of the tribe’s understanding of the external world, is replaced by one’s own uncertainty of one’s safety and security in the internal (social) world.
