Europe didn’t need agricultural lands – look at calorie consumption in England vs the rest of the world in the year 1000. Europe needed markets. the “world’s mall” was the levant at the intersection of four continents. But it wa a land based trade. The europeans replaced land based trade with sea based trade (that the chinese could have) and this trade financed the age of european expansion. ,and the costly technologies europeans have generally excelled at producing.
