Great question. Fascinating subject. Easiest to understand if we begin wirh sex differences in general cognition, proceed to sex differences in mathematical problem solving, and then use this understanding and explain civilizationd differences, and in particular differences in mathematical problem solving. TLDR version is empathizing, words and pictures treating math as language, vs systematizing, objects and transformation as measurements in space. Though this is relatively complex cognitive science the research is out there. But in reductive terms all human differences in behavior originate in sex differences in cognition, which is substantial in the aggregate. Ask for more if you are interested. This is one of my principle areas of research.
