Katherine:
More generally, since most people are not intellectually honest or seeking to understand, but seeking to justify their priors, then debate the ideas for the benefit of the audience using your opponents as foils. At least you’ll help those few intellectually honest among them seeking to understand or trying to justify the priors you’re reinforcing.
The rest will sample the ideas, dismiss or ignore them, and others will resist and rebel against them with increasing degrees of resistance. And no it’s not arbitrary. Because our moral differences are just bias in responsibility for self and capitalization of the commons vs irresponsibility for self and consumption of commons and nothing more. Everything else is just posturing negotiation and undermining. 😉
This is what the study of human speech, especially our vast sophisticated inventory of lying to ourselves and others will teach the student willing to do the dirty work of cleaning human speech of ignorance, error, bias, and deceit.

Cheers
