So effectively we are not using notation for what it is we’re describing and measuring, and we have to compensate with ‘magic words’ to transform easily factorable math into counts, measures, and directions.

@milordog1 It ‘should’ be -1 for consistency. And the idea of ‘complex, rational, and irrational numbers’, are grammatical tricks that like the verb to-be in english obscures causality. Arithmetic(counting), math(ratios), geometry(space) are different grammars.
