Christianity consists of (a) a threat (hell) and promise (heaven), (b) a pledge to do no harm, (c) a pledge to exhaust one’s forgiveness, (d) a pledge to exhaust one’s charity.

Together they constitute a pledge to survive by via-negativa merit.
Swearing on the bible confirms those pledges.
