I don’t take it as sycophancy because I can easily tell the difference. ;). In my experience when people who are sufficiently knowledgeable and able, first encounter our work and begin to understand it there is a period of up to six months or so, of, I guess, excitement or elation as their ability to explain the world around them increases. If people don’t get stuck because of a prior, or because they lack the ability, then they will continue to progress after that period. And some ‘spin off’ because they have a niche interest or find one aspect of the work disquieting.
