( My mother, from a large French speaking family, was prohibited from speaking french at home as a child, so that she would not encounter the challenge of being behind her parents faced, in an english speaking school system. But as she ages, she increasingly inserts french phrases. Which I find adorable. I could understand a little household french as a child but have lost it. And I think my previous familiarity with spanish, german, italian is disappearing along with my increasing dependence on english and operationalism. I think you must ‘feel’ the compatibility between languages.)
