—‘Frei’ is simply High German for the ancient Germanic words for Free, as ‘Fri’ is in Friesian. Link below shows that ‘Fri’ is also the basis of the word friend which originally meant a free member of one’s tribe. Friend and Frieden I would posit have the same origin.
