One of the chief personal benefits of a vow of poverty and membership in a military, judicial, intellectual, pedagogical, or care-taking field is that one gets a pass on signalling in exchange for room and board.

My guess is a lot of men would do so if the rules are tough enough to keep out the peasantry and the room and board is secure.
