2) There never was ‘one’ roman empire. Rome, Greece, Anatolia, the Levant, Persia, Egypt, fought for control of trade routes until their aristocratic warrior classes were domesticated by ‘civilization’ – one falling after the other. Rome-Roman empire. Byzantium = Greek Empire.

@Ozpin_88 @curtdoolittle God help me, I feel so impatient with evaluating history by current tropes. You have GOT to understand western Catholicism was BREAKING your so-called “monopoly” of Byzantium. It was China AND Islam who had “monopoly” of the Silk Road. Stop provincial views of history.
