THE FUNDING OF ASSAD BY DRUG MONEY
Fenethylline (BAN, USAN) is a codrug of amphetamine and theophylline and so a mutual prodrug of both. The drug was marketed for use as a psychostimulant under the brand names Captagon, Biocapton, and Fitton.
It is now illegal in most countries and is produced primarily for illicit use, which takes place mainly in the Middle East – where alcohol is prohibited and Captagon serves the market instead.
Smuggling of Captagon became one of the main sources of income for the Assad regime to help boost the economy during the Syrian Civil War. It was considered to be the world’s largest producer of the drug, accounting for about 80% of the global supply.
(Does this mean Terrorist run on meth? 😉 )
