Great question, and for the past fifteen minutes, on and off, I have been thinking if I can answer this question without a presentation, so that you would have enough understanding of the simplicity of the nervous system. That’s because aside from explaining the simplicity of it when you understand it, I’d have to take the existing objections off the table (Qualia etc) as well as misunderstandings (what’s being transmitted by neurons) and basic lack of understanding (how spatial location is calculated along with all thought), and how it’s organized and ‘indexed’ for memory in the hippocampal hen auto associated, then combined with valence, how it succeeds or not in passing the thalamus such that your frontal cortex becomes ‘aware’ of it. Once you have all those parts in the sequence it can make sense. Without it, it’s hard for people to overcome our natural intuitions and the nonsense of philosophers and pseudoscientists that have framed public discourse.
