—“I don’t see why conquest would attract warfare from others unless their interests were directly involved.”—
Playing checkers when the game is chess.
Time for you to read or listen to:
1. Keegan’s History of Warfare which counter’s Clausewitz and explain that war is a cultural disposition and terms and reasons for war vary by culture – in doing so explaining why the west has a naive version of limited war inherited from our ancestors that were more evolved and less ‘different’ from one another than the peoples of other civilizations.
2. Van Creveld’s “the culture of war” and “the transformation of war’ Again, VC explains that war is a culturally differentiated thing, and societies evolve and adapt to it. So different socieities percieve the conduct and victory conditions of war as vastly different.
War is simply another form of entrepreneurship, and it is the most profitable one. People do not need reasons to conduct war other than that there is something to be gained. The purpose of defense is to raise the cost of anything to be gained such that those gains are not worth pursuing.
In effect strategic war is ‘The Great Game’ that combines politics, intelligence competition, war, geopolitical strategy and the imperial (or federal) ambitions of powers.
So your implication that little states of Europe somehow have a choice is naive in the context of past, present, and future history. In fact it’s only the USA that made the limited sovereginty of ‘little states of europe’ possible.
As such my purpose with self determination by self determined means is simply the optimum means of reducing war, conquest, empires, and genocides.
I do not mean anything other than this provides a universal standard of decidability that is purely derived from human nature, as much as is reciprocity in international law, and variations on reciprocity within states to maintain social cohesion.
So really, I hvae no idea why you’re even debating this issue with me unless you’re imitating every other ideological faction saying you wish the world was as you wish it not as it is. 😉
Cheers 😉
