I’m not sure why it’s an error. The entirety of the evolution of every civilization consists almost exclusively of limiting one another to just that rule such that increasingly complex cooperation is required.
So it’s not that we EXPECT people to act in other than short term self interest, it’s that we FORCE people into it with traditions, wisdom literatures, institutions, laws, and norms – a great edifice of suppressing the alternatives.
I can’t quite get around what’s ‘off’ in your thinking in these matters other than you seem to thinkn there is some alternative to what I’m stating. The only alternative I can think of is that you expect people to act without these constraints, or that without them we would be better off somehow, or that conversetly we would be better off with more expansive constraints with less opportunity for variation.
I say what I”m after and why. I hear you say what’s true, good, and bad, but not what you’re after. Because your ‘amplitude’ of counter signaling my ‘search for the pareto optimum’ by leaving the options a little more open is apparently agitating to you. 😉
