I think if you mean the purpose of religion is social – the individual should conform, and conversely the purpose of philosophy is either personal or political – and the individual should advocate or pursue.
If we survey all religions across time their purpose is to create mindfulness by shared metaphysics, values, morals, ethics, manners, and most importantly *means of persuasion, persistence, because it reduces the chance of conflict, increases the chances of cooperation, and increases the velocity of cooperation by the production of trust. The result is mindfulness (suppression of neuroticism).
What you mention above is a correct derivation and restatement of the causes I’ve stated here. So in that sense, you’re correct. 😉
