I’ve worked on this issue a bit. And I think we’re close to understanding ‘what goes wrong’. Because it’s disturbing how much eccentricity emerges – especially in males – above 140. Women above 140, though there are far fewer of them, do not seem to over-systematize (obsess) like the men do. We do discover the rare case of Terrance Tao, or Marilyn Vos Savant, but we also discover the Chomsky, Ed Witten, who are ‘odd’, and unfortunately we also discover Rosner and Langan who are ‘a bit off’.
Now I have spent enough time on Langan to grasp what went wrong, but that said, his attempt at a synthesis, while a failure, is not absurd. But it is the kind of error that people who are ‘a bit off’ make – just like Chomsky.
