The usa started out as a deeply religious puritan protestant country, dominated by english (different regions), scotts-irish (from northern ireland) and from broader Germania. I try to explain to people that Americans speak english and rely on english institutions, but are germanic in their (our) efforts. Or as other historians have explained “americans are more western than the europeans” because upon founding the government, we intentionally modeled ourselves after Rome.
