The people of the first generation of homo sapiens sapiens, that lived in east africa, and crossed the Bab-el-Mandeb straight at the mouth of the red sea, when it was still partly or fully dry, had developed simple boats and fishing line and fishing hooks before they left on their journey out of africa (and migrated back and forth for that matter).
It was 30,000 years later and 40,000 years ago that their descendents reached japan. At that time japan was connected to asia both at the north and the south. This geography can still be seen in maps of the ocean floor.
