The family emerges (we think) from teh consanguinous family (even between siblings) to the panalauan family (prohibiting siblings) to the pairing family (man and woman pairing off) as populations increased and options were available. The family as we understand it is a product of agrarianism. And since we have largely exited agrarianism we are entering an odd period of uncertainty over the organization of reproduction and the division of labor.

AFAIK we will return and are returning to the historical class divisions of a hierarchy of monogamy, to serial monogamy to, single motherhood, which is the tendency throughout history. Jews only ended it in the 1500s and the Irish in the 1800s.

Marriage is largely a socio-economic-political necessity (or not) because it increases responsibility for both private and common and produces the lowest risk of externalization of bad behavior on the community.

Marriage became necessary with agrarianism and the importance of inheritance given the scarcity of capital and the challenge of productivity.

Likewise our religions (as you assume they are universal but they are not) arose during the same period.
