Why? they (really) believed the common people were just another form of domesticated animal. And if you knew much about their behavior, you’d understand their position.

Jesus was trying to change the behavior of the common people so that it was compatible with european aristocratic civilization and the wealth that civilization brought with it through peace, order, and law.

Jesus’ teachings are as good as those of buddha or socrates. Churchianity is every bit as ridicuoous as the other abrahamic religions. But if that’s what it takes to get the message across to the peasants women and slaves, (and children) then that’s what it takes.
